Anthony Maras is an Australian-Greek filmmaker who has focused on topical issues ever since he made his first acclaimed short film about Afghani refugees in Australia, Azadi (2005), which—along with his second short about the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, The Palace (2012)-- won Best Short at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, and which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival.
Maras was director/co-writer/co-editor of his feature debut, Hotel Mumbai (2018), about the November 26, 2008, terror attack on the Indian city’s prime hotel, starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Anupam Kher and Jason Isaacs, co-produced in Australia, India and the U.S., and which grossed over $21 million globally for distributors Bleecker Street (U.S.)/Icon Film Distribution (Australia)/Zee Studios and Purpose Entertainment (India) after premiering at the Toronto Film Festival.
Maras returned to the big screen eight years later as director/editor of co-screenwriter David Haig’s 2014 WW2 play about Gen. Dwight Eisenhower’s struggle to launch D-Day, Pressure (2026), starring Brendan Fraser (as Eisenhower), Andrew Scott, Kerry Conden, Chris Messina and Damian Lewis, produced by Working Title Films and StudioCanal, and released by Focus Features (North America)/StudioCanal (Europe)/Universal Pictures (Latin America/Middle East/North Africa/Asia).
Anthony Maras was born and raised in Adelaide, Australia, by his Greek-born parents, who had previously migrated to Australia.
